It’s a regular Thursday sync until my manager cuts our Figma license and hands the whole product team one month to go fully AI. In this one, I walk through who made that call, the surprisingly solid case for it, and the very selfish panic running through my head while I said nothing.

When the tool you spent a decade mastering loses its market value in a single meeting, what exactly are you afraid of losing: your job, or your identity?

A few months ago, on a normal Thursday morning, my manager cut Figma out of our entire design process.

I was at my kitchen counter with a fresh coffee, half awake, on our weekly UX sync. Nothing on the calendar said this was the meeting that would change how I work.

Then the news dropped. The whole product team—PM, design, and engineering—was moving to a 100% AI workflow by the end of the month. And the Figma license, the tool most of us built our careers around, was getting cut.

No debate. No "what does everyone think?"

This decision had already been made in a meeting I wasn't invited to.

But first, check out this week's sponsor:

Here's what was actually running through my head:

❌ Not "what an interesting evolution of our design process"
❌ Not "I wonder what this means for our users"
✅ All I could think was: “So we're all UI engineers now? Is this the job until I retire?"

Every single thought was about me: My title. My status. My career and all the years I spent getting good at a very specific tool.

Not one thought was about the actual work.

That reaction is the whole reason this season exists.

Because once I calmed down, the honest truth was that the decision made sense. Bob Baxley made a good point. The value hadn't gone to zero. It had just dropped enough to change the math on paying for two tools that increasingly do the same job. Cameron Moll put the leadership version of it bluntly: get your team off the dock and into the boat as fast as you can.

Two things turned out to be true at once. The call was a good one. I still felt the ground move.

Episode 2 of Beyond UX Design is about that meeting, the surprisingly solid case for it, and the very selfish panic I never said out loud.

If your company hasn't had this meeting yet, I'd gently suggest not assuming it isn't coming.

And if you've had your own kitchen counter moment, I want to hear about it.

New episode out now, wherever you get your podcasts.

If you've been building UIs with AI, you know the problem.

You describe what you want, the agent builds it, and it comes out fine. But it’s also pretty generic: the same onboarding, the same card layout you've seen a hundred times, because the model has never actually seen good work. It's just guessing. Mobbin fixes that. Their MCP server connects over 600,000 shipped app screens straight into Cursor or Claude, so you can explore real patterns before you build instead of course-correcting later.

My whole team uses it, and it's saved us a ton of time. Visit mobbin.com/beyondux for 20% off Mobbin Pro, and go see what good looks like before you start.
